~ Learn to Break the Rules
One of the most important things I’ve learned in my career is when, how, and what rules to break. We live in a world full of rules — some of them are written in law, some are assumed over time, and some are self-imposed. The business world is no exception, in fact, I would argue that it’s one of the most rule-driven environments in our culture.
There are rules about age, salaries, abilities, wardrobe, interactions, relationships, communication, ethnicity and much more!
In reality, most of these rules are not found in the employee handbook, they are not created by the CEO or HR team. They are self-imposed, and when broken correctly, these rules can reveal shortcuts.
~ How do you identify which rules to break?
It’s easy, the key lies in asking the right questions to the right people. When you start hearing things like “I’m not sure why …”, “That’s never been done before …”, or “Good luck getting that done.” You know that you are on to something.
Once you’ve identified everyone’s self-imposed rules you can start to play outside of those rules. Just be aware that once people catch on to what you’ve done, two things happen. First, people resent you because you got ahead and they didn’t. Second, they follow you because you showed them a better way.
